after a two + year hiatus from lifting weights, I was able to put up 205 on the flat bench yesterday. Not a ton of weight, as I used to be able to push this off my chest 10 to 12 times, but an accomplishment for being 35 (turning 36 this month) and going from absolute horrible condition to shaping up and dropping 15 lbs.

My goal is to be able to bench press 225 for a minimum of 4 reps. I will never max out like I used to (275 lbs when I was in my 20's) but when I was that strength I could push 225 for about 7 -8 reps, so relatively speaking I am looking for around a 250 lbs max.

I have been working out for only 6 weeks, going every 3 days religiously. I alternate workouts like this.

Workout 1- Everything is done with a straight bar. Bench, Incline, Miltitary, Curls, Tricep pushdowns, and some light back.

Workout 2- Everything is done with dumbells. Bench, flys, shoulder press, lateral shoulder raises, single arm curls, alternate arm curls (max the weight for the babes!), tricep behind head press, back rows.

Workout 3- Everything is done on the machines. Two different exercises for each body part. I really hit my back hard on these days.

I also begin each workout with twenty minutes of cardio (usually stationary bike) which I get my heartrate between 140-150 for 10-12 minutes, and finish each workout with two grueling ab machine sets.

Will update every few weeks or so.

Pretty interesting workouts..........

I probably dread the straight bar days...I only bench on the straight bar every once in a while to see where I'm at.

Machine day would be the fave........but also with the least results

You might want to becareful curling or tricep work with straight bar. The natural position of your arm is not 100% staright, it curves a bit and using straight bar might put some unintentional stress on your arms.

I understand the staright bar is the meat and potatoes of weight lifting but I'm talking from experience - just becareful.

Good luck with on your quest

Straight bar tricep pushdowns are actually the inverted "V" shaped bar. I agree, much better and safer than the straight bar, which I dont even think they have at the gym anymore.

As far as the maxing out goes, I pushed up 185 a few times so I was not truly going to my max. My max at rest without prior sets would probably be 215, maybe. I agree with you on that also that I will no longer blow out a heavy weight, but do a moderate weight 4-5 reps. I am to old to care but my shape has changed and I was wanting a true measure of where I stacked up and how far I had to meet my goal. I am guessing about 10-12 more weeks (25 workouts or so) to make it. My wife loves it an my stamina in the sack has gotten much better as I can put a poundin on here for a good 20-30 minutes STRAIGHT..then it is here turn!

Yep, this has happened to me - once you hit 30 you can easily injury your shoulder benching with a barbell - I had to go dumbells only for chest.

I never maxed out and still blew out a shoulder in a fluke injury, it's never been the same...I stopped trying to bench heavy , I use to do 5 rep sets well into the 300's...Now I can't imagine putting that kind of stress on my shoulders! But what I noticed was my strength seems to have dropped to a level where I don't think I could lift that kind of weight again...like someone else said though why risk serious injury just to say you can bench this or that, you can look nearly as strong without a 400lb BP , once you have laid the groundwork.

Getting older sucks...

Good luck with your goals they appear to be well within reach.
